The Mitsubishi G4M1 Type 1 Attack Bomber (Allied codename "Betty") was the Imperial Japanese Navy's primary land-based medium bomber throughout WWII. The G4M achieved extraordinary range by carrying fuel in unprotected integral wing tanks, earning it the grim nickname "one-shot lighter" from its own crews for its tendency to catch fire when hit. Despite this vulnerability, the G4M served in every theater of the Pacific War, from the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse to the final surrender delegation flight.
