The Kyushu J7W1 Shinden was one of the most radical Japanese fighter designs of WWII—a canard-configuration pusher-propeller interceptor designed to combat B-29 Superfortresses at high altitude. The "Magnificent Lightning" featured forward canard wings, a rear-mounted engine driving a six-blade pusher propeller, and an estimated top speed of 466 mph. Only two prototypes were completed before the war's end, with the first flight occurring on August 3, 1945—just twelve days before Japan's surrender. The Shinden remains one of the most fascinating "what-if" aircraft of WWII. Hasegawa captures this unique canard fighter.
