The 1989 Yamaha YZR500 (0WA8) was the factory 500cc Grand Prix machine ridden by Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz's rival. The V4 two-stroke engine produced over 155 horsepower, channeled through Yamaha's signature deltabox aluminum frame. The 1989 season saw intense battles between Yamaha and Honda, with the YZR500 proving competitive against the NSR500 throughout the year. Yamaha's YPVS exhaust valve system and crankcase reed valve induction gave the engine a broad, usable powerband. Hasegawa captures the sleek Marlboro-era bodywork and the mechanical complexity of the GP500 two-stroke.
