The Kawanishi N1K1-Ja Shiden (Violet Lightning) was one of Japan's finest late-war fighters, converted from a floatplane design into a land-based interceptor. Despite its hasty conversion resulting in long landing gear and maintenance difficulties, the Shiden's four 20mm cannons and combat flap system made it one of the few Japanese fighters that could challenge F6F Hellcats on equal terms.
