The F-4F Phantom II in West German Luftwaffe splinter camouflage represents the simplified, lighter variant of the Phantom built specifically for the German Air Force. The F-4F deleted the rear cockpit weapons controls and Sparrow missile capability to reduce weight, optimizing it for the air superiority role over Central Europe. The distinctive splinter camouflage pattern, featuring sharp-edged patches of green, gray, and dark green, was designed for concealment over the forested terrain of Central Europe.
