The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (Swallow) was Japan's only operational inline-engined fighter, powered by a license-built Daimler-Benz DB 601. Its liquid-cooled engine gave it a sleek, European-looking profile that confused Allied pilots who initially thought they were fighting Bf 109s or Italian fighters. The Ki-61-Id variant added two 20mm Ho-5 cannons in the wings. Allied codename "Tony." Tamiya's 1/48 kit features the distinctive inline-engine cowling and detailed cockpit.
