The Grumman X-29 was one of the most radical experimental aircraft ever built, featuring forward-swept wings that challenged conventional aerodynamic wisdom. NASA and DARPA funded the X-29 program to explore the potential advantages of forward-swept wing design, including improved transonic maneuverability and reduced drag. The aircraft was inherently unstable and required a triple-redundant fly-by-wire computer making 40 corrections per second to maintain stable flight. Only two X-29s were built, flying from 1984 to 1991 at NASA Dryden (now Armstrong) Flight Research Center. Hasegawa captures the unique forward-swept wing configuration in NASA markings.
