The Douglas A-1H Skyraider was the US Navy and Air Force's premier propeller-driven attack aircraft during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Despite being a piston-engine design in the jet age, the Skyraider could carry an astonishing 8,000 pounds of ordnance—more than a WWII B-17 bomber. This version includes rocket pods among its extensive underwing stores. In Vietnam, the A-1H (nicknamed "Spad" or "Sandy") flew critical combat search and rescue escort missions, protecting downed pilots until helicopters could extract them.
