The Fiat CR.42 Falco was the last biplane fighter to see combat in significant numbers, and Italy's most-produced wartime fighter aircraft. Despite being obsolete by 1940 standards, the CR.42 was extraordinarily maneuverable and saw action over Britain during the Italian Corpo Aereo Italiano's brief deployment alongside the Luftwaffe in late 1940. Flying from Belgian bases, Italian CR.42s attacked targets in southeast England — one of the war's more unusual chapters.
