The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird remains the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft ever built, capable of sustained Mach 3.2+ flight at altitudes above 85,000 feet. Designed by Kelly Johnson's Skunk Works, the SR-71 featured titanium construction, Pratt & Whitney J58 turbo-ramjet engines, and a shape that inadvertently pioneered stealth technology. During its 34 years of service (1964-1998), no SR-71 was ever shot down despite over 4,000 hostile missile launches against it—the Blackbird simply outran them all.
