The F-35B is the short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the Lightning II, designed for the US Marine Corps and Royal Navy. Its Rolls-Royce LiftFan and swiveling exhaust nozzle enable vertical landings on amphibious assault ships and ski-jump carriers without catapults.
