Tamiya 1/700 Waterline Series model of the USS Indianapolis (CA-35), a Portland-class heavy cruiser with a tragic legacy. After secretly delivering components of the first atomic bomb to Tinian Island, Indianapolis was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58 on July 30, 1945. Of her 1,195 crew, approximately 900 went into the water; only 316 survived after four days of exposure, dehydration, and shark attacks—the worst maritime disaster in US Navy history.
