The Northrop F-5E Tiger II was designed as an affordable, easy-to-maintain supersonic fighter for export to US allies under the International Fighter Aircraft program. Its twin J85 engines, simple avionics, and low operating costs made it the fighter of choice for over 30 nations. The US Navy and Marines also operated F-5Es as "aggressor" aircraft, simulating Soviet MiG-21 tactics in dissimilar air combat training.
