The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (Geländewagen) was born from a 1970s collaboration with Steyr-Puch to create an uncompromising military and civilian off-road vehicle. The G230 featured the 2.3-liter M102 four-cylinder engine, three locking differentials, and a body-on-frame construction that made it virtually indestructible off-road. Originally developed for the Shah of Iran's military, the G-Wagen went on to become a status symbol while retaining genuine off-road capability that embarrasses purpose-built competitors.
