Bandai Namco Filmworks revealed Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO on Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con. It arrives in 2027, it's directed by the man behind Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and it's set in a brand-new timeline with no connection to the Universal Century or the Common Era.
And unlike most anime announcements, this one came with kits attached on day one.
What Bandai Announced at SDCC 2026
The essentials, confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con and in Bandai Namco Filmworks' official release:
- Title: Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO — pronounced "Alex Zero," which is not obvious from the spelling.
- Premiere: 2027.
- Director and series composition: Kenji Kamiyama.
- Animation production: SOLA ANIMATION. Sunrise is credited with planning, with Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate as original creators.
- SF setting supervisor: novelist Toh EnJoe. Gundam design: Eiichi Shimizu. Music: Go Shiina.
- Lead character: Ray Azumi, voiced by Takeo Otsuka — orphaned by an attack, and the designated pilot of a machine called Gundam ZERO.
- Gunpla: HG 1/144 Gundam ZERO and HG 1/144 Gundam Helix, announced in the same wave — prices and dates undetermined.

The series is the opening piece of something Bandai is calling the RG Project — a multimedia universe where the anime and an upcoming action game, GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, share one continuous world across generations. XARX-ZERO is set roughly a century before the game, covering how that world came to be.
The Gunpla: HG 1/144 Gundam ZERO and HG Gundam Helix
That's the anime news. Here's what it means at the workbench.
Gunpla was announced in the same wave as the anime.
Confirmed so far: HG 1/144 Gundam ZERO, the protagonist machine, and HG 1/144 Gundam Helix from GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT — including an "Earth Blue Ver." for game bundles. Gundam ZERO is also slated for GUNDAM UNIVERSE, METAL ROBOT SPIRITS, Gundam Miximize, and Gundam Cross.
That makes HG 1/144 Gundam ZERO the first XARX-ZERO Gunpla anyone can actually plan a shelf around — and an HG of the lead suit at announcement is the normal signal that the merchandising plan is already built. It doesn't guarantee a deep lineup, but it's the earliest a series can get one.
A brand-new timeline also means brand-new mobile suit designs. Not another RX-78 variant. Not a refreshed Zaku. When Gundam launches a genuinely separate continuity — the way Iron-Blooded Orphans or The Witch from Mercury did — the mechanical design gets to start from scratch, and the kits that come out of it should be new molds rather than reissues with different runners. New continuity has historically meant new engineering, and modern Bandai kits from fresh series have been some of the best-engineered plastic they've produced.
What isn't known: the money. Bandai listed the HG Gundam ZERO price and release date as undetermined. That's the part to be patient about — anyone quoting you a date or a price today is guessing, and we'd rather tell you nothing than tell you wrong.

Why Kenji Kamiyama Directing Gundam Is a Real Signal
If Kenji Kamiyama's name doesn't register, it should. He directed Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which is one of the genuinely canonical anime series of the 2000s — dense, political, patient, and far more interested in institutions and ideas than in spectacle. He went on to co-direct Netflix's Ultraman and Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, and directed The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim in 2024.
That's not a safe-hands hire. It suggests Bandai wants this one taken seriously as a show, not just as a product line.
Kamiyama described the brief, in Bandai's own release, as something he had to argue himself into:
When I was approached with the idea of creating 'a Gundam set in an entirely new timeline, one that is neither the Universal Century nor the Common Era,' I found myself wrestling with all sorts of questions.
That's not a typo on our end, by the way: the Common Era is Gundam 00's calendar, distinct from the Cosmic Era of SEED. Kamiyama is ruling out the two biggest modern continuities by name.
RG Project vs Real Grade: The Name Collision
The "RG" in RG XARX-ZERO has nothing to do with Real Grade.
It refers to the RG Project, the shared-universe initiative — and Bandai Namco hasn't said what the initials stand for. But Gunpla builders have used "RG" to mean Real Grade since 2010, and those two meanings are going to sit on top of each other in every search bar and forum thread for the foreseeable future.
That collision just got sharper, because the first announced kits are HGs — Gundam ZERO and Gundam Helix — from the RG Project. "RG Gundam ZERO" is going to mean two different things depending on who's asking. If you're searching for kits over the next couple of years, you may need to be more specific than you're used to.
Our Real Grade kits are still Real Grade. Nothing about the existing lineup changes.
What We Still Don't Know About XARX-ZERO
Being straight about the gaps:
- No premiere date beyond "2027."
- No prices or release dates for the announced kits.
- No episode count or broadcast details.
- What "RG" actually stands for. Bandai hasn't said.
- Almost nothing about the story. We know where it sits in the RG Project timeline; we don't know the plot beyond the teaser's framing of an object arriving from outside the solar system and reshaping human expansion.
